Apple joins foldable tech market: Foldable iPhone, iPad, MacBook coming soon
Apple is reportedly set to debut in the foldable smartphone market in 2026 with a flip-style iPhone, according to Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC). This strategic move is expected to boost the foldable market significantly, with projections suggesting a 30 per cent increase in global sales in 2026. By comparison, growth estimates for 2024 and 2025 are limited to 5 per cent and 4 per cent, respectively.
Reports indicate that Apple is working on two foldable products, one of which is a clamshell-style iPhone featuring a foldable display measuring between 7.9 and 8.3 inches. This device is anticipated to resemble the Galaxy Z Flip series in design, with Samsung rumored to supply its display panels.
Additionally, Apple is believed to be exploring a foldable iPad or an “all-screen MacBook” concept. This device could feature an 18.8-inch foldable screen, pushing boundaries in design and usability. While production of the foldable MacBook is expected to begin in 2027, the foldable iPhone is slated to launch earlier, marking Apple’s first step into this growing segment.
Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has noted Apple’s systematic approach to foldable technology, highlighting a staggered rollout strategy. The foldable iPhone is expected to arrive in 2026, with larger devices such as the foldable MacBook or iPad following in 2027.
This move positions Apple alongside established competitors like Samsung, which has already built a strong portfolio of foldable products.
